In a collaboration with Chris Drummonds, we conceptualized and created a small series of fold-up paper toys in the form of shambling zombie animals.
I sketched and designed the initial concepts for each character. Chris used my sketches to mentally deconstruct them and created a functional template that could be cut out, folded, and pieced together without glue. Given his deconstructed template, I drew and colored the character designs into it. Together, we refined all areas of each design both aesthetically and structurally.
One of the largest challenges in this project was keeping in mind that they will be produced and put together by hand and by the average person. This means we had to keep the design simple enough to be easily assembled, without sacrificing visual quality. We wanted these to look good, but acknowledged that if they're so detailed, that nobody could assemble them.
